However, unlike General Skilled Migration (GSM) visas, employer sponsored visas do not involve direct competition between applicants.

Even if the allocated spots for employer sponsored visasare filled, eligible applicants can still receive a bridging visa, allowing them to continue gaining work experience while waiting for processing. While an increase in applications may lead to longer processing times, it does not reduce your chances of being granted the visa—as long as you meet all requirements.

Does Unpaid Internship Count Towards subclass 482 Visa Work Experience Requirements?

Unfortunately, no. Work experience gained through voluntary or unpaid employment does not count towards the work experience requirements for the 482 employer sponsored visa. To qualify, applicants must provide proof of paid, relevant work experience in their nominated occupation.

Can You Apply for a 482 Visa Without a Degree?

Yes, it is possible to apply for a 482 employer sponsored visa without a formal degree. Instead, you may use your previous work experience to obtain qualifications via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). However, it’s important to note that:

Both chefs and cooks are eligible for the 482 employer sponsored visa and Subclass 186 visaDirect Entry (DE) stream, but choosing the right occupation is crucial.

Apply as a Chef if your job duties clearly include:

  • Menu planning
  • Staff training
  • Supervising kitchen operations

Apply as a Cook if your job duties are primarily focused on:

  • Food preparation
  • Cooking meals
  • Following established recipes

If your current role does not include leadership responsibilities, applying as a cook may be a safer option.

Do You Need to Complete the Required Terms Under Your 482 Visa?

Yes, you must fulfill the required terms of your 482 employer sponsored visa until your new visa is granted. However, if you become eligible for and are approved for another visa (such as the 186 visa TRT stream or a GSM visa), the terms of your new visa automatically override the conditions of your 482 visa.

New Updates on 186 visa TRT Stream & Work Experience Requirements

As of December 7, 2024, new rules apply to the Subclass 186 Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream: Full-time work experience gained under different employers now counts. Previously, applicants needed to work for the same employer throughout their 482 employer sponsored visa period. Under the new rule, if you change employers or sponsors during your 482 visa, your work experience will continue accumulating instead of resetting.

Please note that: Only work experience gained while holding a 482 or 457 visa counts under the 186 visa TRT Stream. Your qualifying work experience starts from the date your 482 or 457 visa is granted—so it’s important to start accumulating the required two years of work experience as soon as possible if you’re planning to transition to PR.
